I enjoy poems, says Asia. A lot of poetry has to do with “disintegrating” language, taking it apart, putting it back together, using it in unique ways, and in ways that help people make new connections or see things differently. That doesn’t mean I always get it on the first try. Sometimes you have to dive in several times before you really start to get at it. I like to use Ismael Reed’s “Beware: Don’t Read This Poem” as an example because not only did I have to wrestle with it (hell, I had to go read analysis of the poem just to understand it), I had to teach it to one hundred some odd teenagers, who are way worse than swimming than I am. And they didn’t react well to it at first. What I’m trying to get at is if this is what you’re going for, then great, I fully support you. I think work like that has a brilliant discovery element to it that has a lot to offer, but you are going to have to get that ego in check because a lot of times that initial reaction isn’t exactly good. How many people do you know that enjoy drowning? You’re either going to have to ignore that initial reaction or you’re going to have to include swimming lessons. That last bit was a joke. But what I mean is that if you want to, you could consider ways to slowly lead people into the depths, says Asia.
