I’ve had this recurring thought come up a few times and I wanted to bounce it off of you, says Asia. It’s still very unfleshed out so stay with me and hopefully I do a good job verbalizing it but here we go. A couple of astrology videos have come across my fyp on TikTok and something about them is bothering me. To summarize, I think that astrology tends toward colonial mindsets and centralizes the West. One of the comments that gave this impression was someone describing Pluto as Machiavellian and other planets and such being described in similar domineering and war-like ways. Another thing that struck me was the number of astrology videos that talked about astrology and current events but only using US history to back up their claims. They were saying historically, every 85 years there is a shift (they cited all the American wars that are about a generation apart) then said that Saturn goes through 85 year cycles in astrology and caused a shift in thinking or revolutions. Did Native Americans have big wars every 85 years? And using wars as a way of showing how the planets encourage a shift in thinking is a little bizarre. I would give it more weight if they showed examples from other countries that aren’t giant military machines pretending to be a government. I don’t know if I’m making any sense, says Asia. I like the symbolism of astrology but it’s too fatalistic for me, I say. From what you describe it sounds like a kind of grand theory of clockwork happenings. Like a deist god but with stars and planets instead. It might be worth checking out some other forms of astrology like Chinese astrology or Babylonian astrology. Maybe, says Asia. What I like about some astrology is the deep layering of correspondences, I say. In alchemy, each metal is associated with a planet for example. I find that interesting, but I’m not interested in the predictive power or its influence on me. It seems something like Tarot has interpretability and openness whereas astrology is less so. Astrology is for people seeking control and order, says Asia. Tarot is the opposite of that.

We’ve been teaching the students about clauses and phrases and misplaced modifiers, says Asia. I got to thinking, How can I show them why?
