I journal with Asia Rhizome Asia loves journaling and sometimes we journal together and write poems together

OK, I want to hear how you guys use your journals, she says. I have three that I use, a smallish lined spiral bound journal for my daily journaling. I call it my junk journal. It doesn't have to be good and I can just rant if I want. The rule for that one is every morning I fill three pages in fifteen minutes then I do a minute poem (I don't always do the poem but when I do them, they go here). Here’s my junk journal, it’s almost full. Then I have a bullet journal that’s used primarily as a planner. So far I have a monthly that looks like this and daily pages look like this. I plan on doing weekly or biweekly reflection pages. I’ll let you guys know what I decide to do for those. The third notebook is a spiral bound lined with cats on the cover that I use for notes. I’m trying to turn it into a commonplace book. You don’t have to do a multibook set up; it’s just what works for me. I’ve been at this for awhile so I’ll give you some tips.

1. Be flexible. Make room for mistakes and learn to work around them because you will make them and that’s OK.

2. Remember that this is for you, it doesn't have to be Pinterest-worthy and you don’t have to force yourself system to use a system that doesn't work for you.

3. Reduce the chance of failure. This might be weird but hear me out. My ADHD brain isn’t always good at being consistent so things like dated planners and habit trackers left too much room for failure because I would go long lengths of time without using it and have untouched unfinished pages. If you are like that then just do something else, work with your brain not against it, again this is for you.

4. This touched on some other points but make journaling accessible to you. I used to make complicated spreads when I was hyperfocused on journeying and it wasn’t sustainable. I learned to simplify it. I also give myself small manageable chunks of time to write and leave my journal on my desk open to the next blank page so that all I have to do is sit down and write.

5. Last but not least, keep it simple.

If anyone wants help troubleshooting journal / planner set-ups I’m down to help. I’ve tried a whole bunch of systems at this point so I might be able to help you figure it out. Also journaling just to journal and not doing the planner thing is also just fine. I just have a brain like a spaghetti colander and it helps me feel grounded, she says.

I have been thinking about the Jenna Marbles situation and reading reactions and things about it, I say. One thing that comes up is the idea of “cancel culture”, like I guess the idea is to destroy people over what they did in the past. And I think of myself as a prophet – what if my work becomes really proliferated one day and people destroy me because I did this or that? I left in my old misogyny and my old objectification on purpose in my book. I am Jonah, I am not Jesus. But people will misinterpret that, won’t they? Christina says I must risk it anyway, I say. I don’t think the Jenna Marbles is just cancel culture, says Asia. I’m sure some people said mean or unfair things to her, but I also think she is just going through a hard time right now… Just be honest, be willing to grow, and when people criticize your work, don’t double down on what you're doing, just consider it and consider whether or not they have a point… Your audience is not going to be the same as Jenna’s. You are dealing with religious themes so you are going to get a lot of fundamentalists saying patronizing things or telling you that you are a sinner or what not, says Asia.

So many things happened at once when I was in college, says Asia. Classes were stressful, my job was stressful, I was struggling with some of my classes, some of the professors were jerks, I started doubting my faith, started fighting with my family, and struggled with anxiety and depression, says Asia. I had a meeting with my spiritual director today. How did it go? We were talking about how Doc was concerned for my mental health because of my proclaimed identity as a prophet of God. He considered my writing a gift from god, and in the writing, there is prophecy – but to be careful and self-aware, to realize the writing is not my own but a gift given… There are many languages to God and prophethood / prophecy is one path and one language to God, I say. I’m glad your meeting went well, says Asia. I still feel a lot of doubt over it but I couldn’t quite express it. Maybe it has to do with the legitimacy of your prophetic work. You know, I never spoke in tongues, says Asia. There was a time in my life where I tried. How did that turn out? I eventually gave up, she says. You don’t have to forgive people but you can't have a relationship with someone if you refuse to forgive them. There will always be resentment otherwise. This doesn't mean that they shouldn’t enforce boundaries or have to welcome that person with open arms, but give them the space to be better.
